Imagine an exciting winter adventure with your friends over the holidays. In K.M. Selvidge’s Kloe’s New Year, Kloe and her friends are off on a school trip over the holidays. Lots of fun is in store, with skiing, ice skating, and bonding with your friends. All is good and exciting until Kloe’s brother, Wreny, and his friend, Janey, add a few pranks, some of them a little dangerous. The principal’s not happy with them, and neither is Kloe. Should she speak up? Confront her brother or just allow him to face the consequences of his actions? It’s a difficult decision to make, but Kloe manages to learn something new about herself along the way.
K.M. Selvidge’s early chapter book, Kloe’s New Year, is the third book in the Kloe Series. The story is told mostly through character dialogue with very little narrative. This makes the story easy for early Middle Graders to read and will certainly help them improve their reading skills. The dialogue not only moves the plot along, but it also develops the characters, defining them well for the conflict that will progress throughout the story. The illustrations are spectacular: bright, bold, colorful, and full of life and energy. With these illustrations, there’s no need for lengthy descriptive narrative passages, as they serve the purpose adequately. This is a great read for early Middle Graders, with important themes like choices and consequences, the importance of friendships and working together to help each other, and, though difficult in reality, the story also shows how mistakes can help a person grow and change for the better.
