It is the summer of 1984. Instead of sending his fourteen-year-old son, William “Will” Timmons Junior, to summer camp like his peers, William Sr., a high-flying executive at Walton B. Woodward’s Sons, a brokerage firm in the heart of Philadelphia, brings him to his workplace. However, William Sr. does not keep his son on the executive floor; he sends him straight to Operations, where the stock market action takes place so that he can learn the trade and gain experience. The Head of Operations assigns Will Jr. to the Bonds Department, where he meets its members, an eccentric pair called Phil and Gary. Phil takes Will Jr. as his mentee and shows him the ropes. Soon, a $500,000 bond goes missing, and the executives bring the Operations floor under fire. Will Jr. might know the truth behind the bond, but he must choose wisely how to use it. Find out how it all goes down in The Bond Traitor by Grayson Tate.

If you are looking for a coming-of-age novel that blends corporate drama with suspense, The Bond Traitor by Grayson Tate is a must-read. Tate weaves a compelling tale here, transporting me back to the 1980s, an era when people still listened to their brokers. The vivid imagery brought the Philadelphia financial district’s setting to life. I could see the scenic views Will Jr. and his father enjoyed every day on their commute to and from home and the financial district. The dynamic conversations, filled with stock market jargon, provided me with insight into the story’s stakes and how the market operated. It is fascinating to imagine that everything was done on paper, from transactions to tracking market updates, save for a few wonder machines like the Quotron. Tate raises critical ethical questions in the story, which are relevant even in the contemporary world. I loved this page-turner.
