The Book of Orm was entertaining and unique. The field of the mythological and fantasy genre is flush with fruit of a similar nature, but Orm and the other short stories within the total Book of Orm were one in a million. A.J. Dalton was able to pull a world out of the basest and least likeable creatures in many a mythology, and did so with skill and grace. Trolls have long been the ugly, stupid villains of fantasy - incarnations such as Orcs and Goblins too. However, it was interesting to get a glimpse into Troll culture, as all species and races have something that means a great deal to them. Mining, rocks, and strength are clearly important here, and it was fascinating to read about underdog Orm and how he struggled to mean something to his nation and tribe. Though Orm was my favorite, I liked The Non-Dragon, another short story, just as much.

I enjoyed the writing style the most in The Book of Orm. A.J. Dalton has the ability to seamlessly integrate description with plot in a way that leaves you restless and eager for the book to progress. All of the characters are ones you can get behind, and though you only have the barest of moments with each one, they all leave great impressions on you. Then, when you think you might have had enough, extras from Nadine West and Matthew White bring just the change of flavor that you were looking for. A solid read and one that has brought many new authors to my doorstep!
