Experiencing Transcendence by Richard Taite and Dr. Constance Scharff teaches that recovery from addiction and trauma is a process of gradually disengaging from past patterns. They tell us that change occurs when we address the underlying causes, while cultivating awareness of bodily sensations and the effects of trauma. They talk about compassion toward oneself, supporting the development of self-care and accountability, and engagement with others for relational stability that reinforces new patterns. Through reflective practices and attention to cognition, emotion, and action, readers can revise interpretations of past events and reduce the influence of previous trauma or addictive behaviors. This process leads to a state they call transcendence, in which previous symptoms no longer dominate daily life, and people can participate fully in relationships and activities without reliance on anything else.
Experiencing Transcendence: The Freedom of Recovering from Addiction and Trauma by Richard Taite and Dr. Constance Scharff is an incredibly informative and thoughtful look at recovery. It is special in how it addresses more than the physical aspects of addiction, and it is clear that trauma recovery is not a linear process. The authors present their material in a way that feels uniquely supportive, and their use of authentic cases and studies allows readers to see how honest self-assessment and committed action take form in real lives. Rather than presenting recovery as a dramatic shift, the book shows how patience, care for others, and consistent attention to personal conduct are also necessary to build a reliable path forward. Overall, this is such a wonderful, empowering book that is both accessible and actionable, and will be of immense value to individuals and professionals alike. Very highly recommended.
