The Boy Who Once Chased Cats by Russell Whitehead revolves around nine-year-old Jake who was faster afoot than most boys of his age and was also very well read. He looked forward to chasing Old Tom every day. Though Jake was never mean spirited, Old Tom could not appreciate the type of games he played and always thought it was one-sided. Cats never liked to be flung by their tails, but Jake used to catch Old Tom by his tail and fling him in the air. The story takes a turn when things change one day and Jake finds himself on the receiving end of another person's idea of fun.

Jake's adventure with the three mischievous cats was not at all enjoyable for him. Little Sister Cat was kind but Jake escapes from there when Sister Cat was fast asleep. The story is delightful with a good message to readers. The illustrations are bright, colorful and lively, and breathe life and movement into the scenes and characters. The story is good for bedtime story-telling and also perfect to use for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The story is thought provoking and the concept is good.

The story has a lot of exciting twists and turns and some interesting characters, which makes it an engaging read. The story teaches readers to be kind to animals and all animal lovers will enjoy reading the book. Will Jake be kind to Old Tom after the experiences he had?
