Kiera and Lamby: Tokyo is a colorfully illustrated picture book for children and part of Nicole O’Connor’s travel-the-world picture book series describing journeys to the world’s famous cities. Kiera is a little girl who tucks in for the night with her favorite toy companion, Lamby. But with so much to explore in the world, Kiera cannot sleep. When her parents settle down to sleep, Kiera and Lamby fly out of the window on Kiera’s magical blanket. They fly over oceans and mountains to Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The story tells us about the places Kiera and Lamby will visit and the food they will eat in Tokyo until morning comes and Kiera wakes up. What will Kiera and Lamby discover in Tokyo?

Kiera and Lamby: Tokyo by Nicole O’Connor is a wonderful introduction for children to Tokyo and Japanese culture. I liked how the book introduced Japanese traditional foods like sushi and ramen, and the traditional sport of sumo. I enjoyed the perfectly written verse. I also liked the colorful illustrations by talented Anika Tasnim that supported the rhymes. Taken together, the rhymes and the full-page pictures made the story memorable and a great tool for expanding children’s cultural horizons while entertaining them. As a curious adult, I enjoyed learning about Tokyo from this story, and I am looking forward to reading this book with my grandson. I highly recommend this beautiful, memorable book to pre-school children, parents, educators, and child carers.
