The Cursed Ground 1 – The Child-Stealers (The Edhai) by A. Roy King is the first in a series of books based on Genesis. The Till are a peaceful people, living in isolation and living off the land. On a foraging trip, a family is attacked by marauders. Troth is knocked out and his daughter Jewel is taken. Boon tries to fight them off while Ward hides in the forest, watching. Boon chases after the marauders to get his sister back, but is forced to return home to gather troops. They take off into the forest to hunt down the thieves and must now beg for help from strangers, people who neither know nor trust them. They are not violent people and know little about fighting, but they come together to confront their enemies and retrieve Jewel.
The Cursed Ground 1 – The Child-Stealers (The Edhai) by A. Roy King was a surprisingly good story. When it begins, you could be forgiven for thinking that it is a modern day story but, in fact, it covers the lives of a people from the past, a time when the reign of peace was being threatened by violence. Although it isn’t a very long book, there was plenty going on and the story was easy to follow. It flowed naturally and moved at a very fast pace. The characters weren’t as well developed as I would have liked, but, as there are another four books to the series, perhaps that will happen later on. The story itself was clearly well thought out and written in an engaging manner, in a way that you really have to read it in one go to see what the outcome is. That is the mark of a good writer to me and Mr. King gets full marks for that. I am interested in reading the rest of the series to see how it all pans out, if there is more to this story than meets the eye.
