The Chimp and the Dog by Patricia Furstenberg tells the story of two animals who find each other through a chance encounter. Staring into a puddle, the dog and the chimp meet for the very first time and despite their many differences become an unlikely pair of friends. Even though the chimp walks on two legs and a dog on four, they both have fun and that’s all that matters. The two have little in common but, despite that, they come together and prove how even the most unlikely of creatures can form a bond because at the end of the day friendship is enjoyable.

The Chimp and the Dog by Patricia Furstenberg beautifully illustrates that no matter the dissimilarities, people or animals can become friends. The chimp and the dog link up even though everything but the color of their eyes is different. This doesn’t matter to either of them though as they both enjoy playing a game of catch. They play until they’re both exhausted and have big grins on their faces. I think this story provides a very important lesson regarding friendship for both very young and even older children. Friendship shouldn’t be about what you look like or where you come from but about how much pleasure you have with the person and whether they make you smile. I particularly love the way that the author uses animals to make this point as you wouldn’t expect a dog and a chimp to be friends in real life. However, anything is possible and any friendship can work as long as you’re open to it.
