After graduating from Cardigan, he attended Brooks School graduating with high honors in Classics and honors in Music. At Trinity College, he majored in English focusing his work on writing poetry. He also rowed for the Trinity Crew team for four years and was a captain twice.

Bob continued to enjoy writing poetry, especially during times of life transitions, but grew a successful financial planning practice in order to provide for his family. In his mid-thirties, he left the business world when God called him to the priesthood and in turn attended seminary at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. After a dragon destroyed his village and killed his grandfather, Ragg swears that he will hunt the beasts down throughout the land until every last one of them is dead. He inadvertently worked together with another dragon slayer, Trallian, whilst hunting a young dragon. Trallian let him have one of his northern dogs, Verlon, and with his new canine companion, Ragg continues to seek his revenge. Little does he know that every step brings him closer to the truth behind his grandfather's death, the dragons, and his own destiny. The more he learns, the more complicated and dangerous things become. The Chronicles of Ragg is an epic fantasy series written by Bob Flanagan, with The Sword of Gabriel as Volume One.

In the beginning, the story starts too slow for me. However, the pace starts to pick up as the story progresses. I also like the short length of each chapter; this aspect will definitely appeal to younger readers. I’m glad that Bob Flanagan gives the characters unique names that are still pronounceable. In fact, all the elements of Flanagan’s fantasy world such as locations, creatures, and even prayers are easily pronounced and still sound distinctive. The glossary included at the end is an added bonus.

The Chronicles of Ragg is a well-told story with excellent depth and originality, as well as well-realized characters readers will enjoy. It is a deeply satisfying fantasy adventure for young and mature adults, brimming with all the elements of a classic that fans of the genre can look forward to.

The Chronicles of Ragg: Volume One: The Sword of Gabriel is a young adult epic fantasy written for a Christian audience by Bob Flanagan. When we first meet Ragg, he's hiding in a dragon's lair and getting ready to slay the dragon as part of his quest for vengeance on all dragons. Ragg's beloved grandfather and family were killed by a dragon, leaving Ragg the only survivor. He's surprised to find that he's not alone with the dragon in that lair -- there's another, a man named Trallion, who has had some experience with dragon hunting. He also has two fine dogs who play and tussle with Ragg as they relax by the fire after slaying the dragon. Trallion gives Verlon, the female puppy, to Ragg. Ragg loses Verlon after he goes into a dragon's den to destroy a clutch of drakons, dragon eggs containing young dragons that scream as Ragg burns them alive. When he leaves the den, Verlon is nowhere to be found. Instead, Ragg is found by grim-faced men, who take him prisoner and bring him to the castle ruled by the evil Lord Crier.

Bob Flanagan's The Chronicles of Ragg: Volume One: The Sword of Gabriel is a dark and sometimes violent epic fantasy suitable for older teens and adults. Ragg is a complex character who seems adrift in his grief and rage. He's also someone upon whom an adult's share of responsibility is thrust. The highlights of the book, for me, were his interactions with Verlon, his dog, where one can see glimpses of the loving and playful child whose tragedy has taken his heart and soul into a darker place, one of vengeance and hatred. It will be interesting to see how Ragg, the man, develops in this coming-of-age trilogy.

The Chronicles of Ragg by Bob Flanagan is a nice high fantasy tale about dragons and the tyrants who abuse them. You will find all you need to be satisfactorily entertained in this tale. It is a good read for a hot day by the pool or by a warm cozy fire in winter. The Chronicles of Ragg is a must-read for those who like high fantasy, mixed with dragons and battles.

Ragg is on an avenger’s trip to kill all the dragons. He believes one killed his grandfather. He tracks, finds, and kill them, wherever they are. After he kills some dragon eggs, with hatching baby dragons, he feels horrible. Soon afterwards he is taken slave for Crier, a bad man who seems to command dragons. Here he has to fight for his life and then be sent to the mines. However, he soon finds himself with the Scian or shadow warriors. They are the only ones who oppose Crier’s madness and tyranny. Ragg matures and does some growing up during his adventures. We will see if this is enough for him to become who he was meant to be.

This is a very interesting tale with a different fantasy plot. It is a good read for young adults and especially for those who love dragons and fantasy books. Bob Flanagan makes a nice first try in this tale of revenge, growing up, facing your demons, and valor all wrapped into one story. It makes me wonder what will come in the next volume.
