The Clearing Where We Grow by P L Mendoza is a lyrical fable that follows the evolving connection between Vargr, a solitary wolf, and Nemethea, an ancient tree in a quiet forest clearing. Told through the lens of the four seasons, the story explores themes of healing, trust, and transformation with gentle prose and timeless imagery. Each chapter builds on the emotional journey of two very different beings—one wandering, one steadfast—who find solace in each other's presence. The story begins in spring, where Vargr, weary from a life of solitude and survival, first encounters Nemethea, whose serene strength and whispered wisdom begin to soften his guarded heart. As the seasons pass, their bond deepens. Summer brings tension, as Vargr wrestles with old wounds and the harshness of his past, while autumn invites reflection and the slow surrender of bitterness. By winter, Vargr has become Nemethea’s quiet protector, offering what warmth he can in return for the peace she has given him.

Throughout the narrative, the forest mirrors Vargr's inner transformations and Nemethea's enduring patience. P L Mendoza’s prose is meditative, drawing readers into the natural world's rhythm and encouraging reflection on our need for connection, stability, and renewal. The pacing is perfect—there is no rush, no dramatic climax—just a steady unfolding of relationship and trust. Readers who enjoy stories about inner healing, nature, and companionship will find much to admire in this tale. The Clearing Where We Grow is a beautifully written and illustrated meditation on finding belonging and the quiet power of love and friendship across differences. It’s an excellent book for 5th and 6th-grade classrooms.
