The Colorful Balloons (Greek and English, Bilingual Edition) by Kalliopi Raikou is a wonderful picture book for young children. A young boy named Jason is at the airport with his mom and dad, heading home after visiting Jason's grandmother. Jason loves his grandmother enormously and is always sad when he has to leave her. Jason isn't as sad as usual, because this time he and his grandmother came up with a brilliant idea to keep their connection whilst apart. Jason blows up a balloon every month and sends it high into the sky so that his grandmother will receive it. Will his grandmother receive his balloons?
The Colorful Balloons is an amazing book. From the start, I was overcome with emotion as I read about Jason and his grandmother's bond, and how they kept it alive until they could reunite. Kalliopi Raikou is a talented children's author, and her professionalism shines through every word that she has written. The story flows nicely and holds the reader's attention throughout. Not only is this book entertaining, but it also has the potential to teach children either Greek or English, depending on their home language. I even picked up a few words. The illustrations by Vivi Markatos are unusual and creative. Children are going to adore them. I hope to see more from this author soon. Keep up the good work.
