After two decades of experimentation, Jack Halstrom finally creates a force field. He now needs to figure out the angles where it could be used. He sees a university colleague and boasts about his discovery, only to be told that it is the most dangerous thing in the world and should be suppressed. Disturbed, Jack decides to post the specifications for the field on the Internet, effectively giving it to everyone. Before he can do it, his house is surrounded by government agents, but they cannot get into the house because it is protected by his field. Trying to upload the specifications, he finds that his phone and Internet connections are cut. He sets up a shortwave transmitter to resolve the problem. With the house surrounded, while Jack is working in the lab, his wife Karen turns off the emergency generator and the police rush into the house. Jack starts up a spare generator, allowing him to keep the authorities at bay while he finishes transmitting the specifications. He makes changes to the software, making the field self-sustaining. Realizing he is trapped within the field, he tries to shut it down. Something emerges into the lab...

The Containment Epiphany touches on a subject that has been dealt with many times before, but author Vincent Moneymaker manages to introduce a new slant to the theme that keeps the reader interested. Overlooking problems associated with a basement inventor coming up with a major discovery, I came to sympathize with Jack’s very predictable situation, and an even more predictable response from the authorities. I found the narrative crisp without being overdone, and the dialogue realistic. Many readers will find this novella entertaining.
