Sometimes the person who disrupts your life may be exactly the person you need. In Fighting for Love by Audrey Paris, Valerie Dunemore owns Dunemore Books in the coastal town of Oakhaven, Massachusetts. Her bookstore is more than a business; it’s her home and a place where she feels comfortable with the life she's created. That changes when her brother rents the loft above the shop to Ronan Chevalier without asking her. He’s the CEO of a large digital media company and has come to the area for a three-week retreat while dealing with career problems. They couldn’t be more different. She values books, community, and a slower routine, while he works constantly and rarely disconnects from technology. Their initial irritation gradually gives way to conversations and an unexpected connection. But just as Valerie begins to see another side of Ronan, an article connected to his firm threatens the trust developing between them. Is their growing relationship strong enough to survive a misunderstanding that makes Valerie question everything she thought she knew about him?
In Fighting for Love by Audrey Paris, the bookstore itself was probably my favorite part. There’s just something about a romance surrounded by shelves of books that appeals to me. Valerie and Ronan were interesting individually, and they had good chemistry too. Their differences created some funny and tense moments without making their connection feel forced. Ronan also had more to him than I expected at first, which I liked. The writing is easy to read, and the fast pace works well for a short story. It definitely never dragged. The misunderstanding added enough conflict to keep me wondering how everything would be resolved. I could easily see this becoming a movie. Anyone looking for a quick love story with an opposites-attract feel, a bookish setting, and a little tension should give this one a try.
