The Depths of Atlantis is a work of fantasy, adventure, and interpersonal drama, and forms the first novel of the Atlantis Trilogy. The work is best suited to the mature end of the young adult reading spectrum as well as adult readers as it deals with some forms and fallout of psychological and physical abuse in a non-graphic way. Penned by author Hannah Carter, the action follows Reanna, who bargained away her mermaid tail to escape to Earth and get away from her wicked mother, the Queen of Atlantis. But when Reanna is pulled back to her own dimension, she discovers the consequences of her first escape and realizes that it’s her place to stay in Gaia and stop the Queen’s relentless destruction.

Author Hannah Carter has crafted a highly engrossing epic fantasy adventure that takes the mermaid concept to a whole new level. One of the things that I really loved about this novel was its grounding in emotional realism, which meant that whether we were on Earth or on Gaia, the feelings of the characters were deeply relatable in their pain, sorrow, triumph, and healing. Reanna is a wonderfully formed central hero with plenty of baggage to carry at such a young age, and she develops wonderfully as her wisdom and empathy grow, thanks to new friends and old wounds that need to be healed. I also really enjoyed the complex presentation of the Queen, who never felt like a filler character or a cardboard cut-out kind of villain, which made the events of the plot all the more sinister. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Depths of Atlantis to fans of YA fantasy and unique, emotive storytelling alike.
