The Deputy is a mystery by C.M. Albrecht. Deputy Wayne Terwilliger hires Willis, an escaped convict, to help his wife Janie on their farm. Willis is happy he has found refuge and works willingly, hoping the deputy does not discover his identity. Wayne is having an affair with Sandy and everyone in the gossipy town of Ashley knows, except Janie. Most folks seem to have things they want to keep secret, but that is not possible in Ashley. Wayne plots to replace Janie with Sandy, but his plan alters when Sandy has a new suitor in her life. He does not take rejection well and intends to do something about it. His colleague, Deputy Andy, tries to help a teen stay out of trouble, but may be too late after seeing the horrifying living conditions at his home.
I found The Deputy by C.M. Albrecht a riveting and well-developed book. He really writes well, and can keep the attention of a reader with his creative talents. Although the plot has serious issues in it, the author still kept me in a humorous mood with the nice selection of characters he created in this small town setting. Their dialogue is unforced and witty at times, and the plot is very intriguing and moves at a good pace with its drama. Everyone has a problem in Ashley, but there are solutions for him or her. C.M. Albrecht tosses some unexpected twists into his enjoyable, suspenseful mystery novel, The Deputy.
