The Everling and the Acid King is the first book in The Everling Series by J. Christie. As a baby, Chezzy was teleported by Winnifred Baker through dimension after dimension. Baker was desperately searching for a safe place for him. Chezzy was raised in a Dickensian orphanage and was accustomed to being passed around the system. At fourteen years old, Chezzy had never found his forever home. Everything changed when a strange headmaster, Aris Kepler, took Chezzy away to an underground academy full of mutants and dazzling technology. Chezzy made friends with a group of strange and loyal friends, and for the first time, he felt that this was his home. Chezzy unlocked dormant powers as the last of the everlings; immortals with healing abilities and mysterious pasts. When the Acid King rose as a threat from beneath the surface, Chezzy had to decide what he was willing to risk for his friends and the place he called home.

The Everling and the Acid King is an extraordinary book filled with magic and dazzling technology. J. Christie has created a fantasy world of powers, abilities, danger, and destiny. Chezzy's journey is about belonging, trauma, and the courage it takes to hope again. The characters were realistic, and each character had a specific role in Chezzy’s journey. The plot has a strong foundation for an epic series. I was excited to learn that this is not a stand-alone but the beginning of a wonderful series.

I was hooked from the beginning of this audiobook, and narrator Solomon Swerling's storytelling held my attention throughout. His vocal performance skillfully transitions between various characters, making each one stand out. The atmosphere was created through pacing, emphasis, and pauses. It was easy to connect and relate to the characters. This story came alive wonderfully through the different voices and emotions.
