Author Biography

I am a Fisherman"s daughter! A brave and decent man rescued my two brother and me from a very bad situation and he adopted us and gave us a good home with love. Commercial Fishing is a very difficult and dangerous profession and many times we did not have much to eat but we were loved. He shared not only the dangers of the sea but the mystical stories which inspired me to write. He died too early and all five children and my mother miss him so much, and that is why I wanted to write this book and honor him. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you

The Fishermen and the Mermaids is a work of fantasy adventure fiction written for children by author Judith M. Ackerman and illustrated beautifully by Kristina Wheeat. Set on the high seas with a magical element at play, the story begins with a father, who was once a fisherman, recounting a magical tale to his daughter. We learn of a terrible storm in which the father fears he might lose his life and never come home, at which point the mermaids really do appear to come to his rescue. Though no-one else believes that they are real, one man and his daughter share the magic of the mermaids together.

For a relatively short book with extensive illustrations, there is much to devour and enjoy among the pages of this magical book. Author Judith M. Ackerman constructs a deceptively simple storyline that will leave young readers asking many interesting questions once the tale is done, and that is combined with dynamic and dangerous moments of peril and amazing rescue. Suitable for both guided and independent reading of children of all ages, the illustrations by Kristina Wheeat only add to the depth of feeling and the magic yet realistic sense of the story. The colors deepen and match the atmosphere of the writing, creating a synergy between story and image that makes particular scenes stay in the reader’s mind long after reading. Overall, this makes The Fishermen and the Mermaids an enchanting read that children and their reading buddies are certain to fall in love with.

The Fisherman and the Mermaid had my students hooked after reading the title! My students love mermaids and they enjoyed sharing their opinion about whether or not they believe in mermaids. I love how the book was based off of a real character, it really brought the story to life! The illustrations were beautifully done and my students were so excited to add this book to our classroom library!

I read this story to my Kindergarten class. The students were captivated the entire read. The students were so interested in finding out if the mermaids were real! ... Many students raised their hand and made connections to the fisherman character. They spoke about experiences going out on the boat with their parents and how sometimes the seas would get rough. The students loved the ending and it was great to see how all their imaginations took off! We are so excited to add it to our classroom library.
