The Gift of Thoran: A Space Novel about Teenagers with Supernatural Powers who Fight Off Alien Invaders as the Galaxy Hangs in the Balance by Patty Lesser is the second book in the Coma Kids series. The ten teenagers have been hiding out at a beach house until an alien known as Kiran contacts Kat and whisks the group off to another planet. Once they arrive, they begin to build a utopia with each of the teens taking up a specific role. Life isn't all bliss as the teens learn about the existence of a dangerous being called the Yarm that threatens to destroy everything in its path. As they harness their individual abilities, they turn to other species for help in coming up with a plan brilliant enough to save the galaxy. Each of the teenagers has their own set of skills which specifically ties into how they progress in their new society. The community they build starts off with elements of paradise with swimming, good food, and everything they could ever need. Their paradise quickly turns to conflict as they face threats from the Yarm and other aliens. These dangers drive conflict into their dynamics with each other, which become tense. A significant life event also causes a few changes in their lives.
As the weight of adulthood and the whole galaxy's fate is placed upon them, they stop being so carefree and instead they have to face up to responsibilities even if they aren't quite ready for them. Though they do face tension, the ten of them also build each other up and form a family unit which helps them deal with missing their families and being separated from their own planet. The story is very community driven and has the ten teens working with various aliens which shows how valuable and important this bond in society is to move forward. The Gift of Thoran continues the adventures of the teenagers with new aliens, new challenges, and a deadly creature bent on destroying the galaxy. Lesser tackles various serious topics in the lives of these teenagers as they face growing up through the lens of a science fiction adventure with a little romance and the power of friendship.
