The Given is the first book in The Given Trilogy by Mickey Martin. Set in a world where only a few are given a second chance, Lilliana is one of those lucky few. Surviving a heinous attack is not easy to get over so they are sent to the Given, a haven for the innocent. This particular Given location is run by brothers Cam and Damon Night. When Lilliana arrived there, she had no expectations at all. Reluctant and hesitant, Lilliana is not sure about the people at the Given. But there is something about Damon that attracts her. Damon is trying to keep things professional between them, but Lilliana’s beauty calls to him. His work here needs his attention and he cannot be distracted. Will he keep his feelings in check or will he give in to what his heart wants? Only time will tell if what they have is meant to last.
The Given is a beautifully intricate story of a man and a woman who are trying their best to fight whatever they have between them, but fate had other plans for them. They match each other so well. Both have a few secrets that they keep hidden from the rest of the world, but when they get together, all walls go down. Damon is a smart man, but with Lilliana, he loses all his senses. Lilliana, on the other hand, hero-worships him and is ready to do whatever it takes to do better. In the quest to know more about Damon, she learned more about herself, and that played well as the catalyst for her catharsis. The pace was perfect, the author built the tension between Damon and Lillian well, and I enjoyed the overall feel of the story. The dialogues revealed a lot about the characters and their state of mind. Mickey Martin left bits of clues here and there, allowing the reader to become invested in the story and stay with Damon and Lilliana until the end. I can’t wait to see what happens next with Damon and Lilliana!
