The Graduate's Guide to Money by Tana Ackerly Gildea is the book to buy for your college graduate this year. Covering everything from your first job, to paying the bills, net worth, buying a house, and much more, this guide provides all of the things they should have been teaching you in high school and college, but probably didn't.
While not necessarily a recent graduate, I am still in that general vicinity in life, so I was excited to see what I could find in The Graduate's Guide to Money. I wasn't disappointed, as the guide is a pretty comprehensive study in the very basics of personal finance. It's not super long, and doesn't cover each item in depth (How could it! Some of these subjects have books dedicated just to one thing like debt, or buying homes), but overall it did a great job hitting all of the points that you should know before you attempt to live on your own for the first time. There will be time to explore each topic as you come to it in your life, but Tana Ackerly Gildea at least familiarizes you with each concept so you will have a pretty good understanding of what you need to do when the time comes.
The writing style, and thus reading style, were very friendly and informal, making this one of the best "transition" books into personal finance that won't scare off the kids who are leery of personal finance, but makes sure that the ones already "in the know" still have something to learn.
