Author Biography

I'm Colin Hodge, co-founder of DOWN, a top 10 dating app in the US, and creator of the Outrageous Growth Method (detailed in my bestselling debut book, Outrageous Startup Growth). Over two decades in tech, I've led growth teams and companies scaling products to over 100 million users, including a successful exit at DOWN (before reacquiring it) and at 17Live, Asia's live-streaming platform, where I served as Chief Growth Officer and later as the first US CEO.

What inspired me to write Outrageous Startup Growth was a realization: the difference between startups that go viral and those that fail comes down to understanding user psychology. I spent years in the trenches, running experiments, negotiating deals, and learning as much from my failures as my wins. I wanted to distill that experience, the behavioral science, the frameworks, the stories I tell over drinks with other founders, into something practical that entrepreneurs and product builders could actually use.

This book is my attempt to hand readers the playbook I wish I'd had earlier: how to engineer FOMO the right way, design experiences that nudge users toward success, and build a growth mindset that survives the inevitable setbacks.

Outside of building companies, I'm a Cornell computer science grad and co-founder of SnowballForGood.com, which channels my advocacy for democracy and human rights into collective action. I split my time between Taipei, Bangkok, Seattle, and San Francisco, and I'm always glad when a reader tells me a chapter changed how they think about their own product.

For a long time, organizations have relied on psychology and behavioral science to market and sell their products. How do startup founders make sure customers get what they want? Colin Hodge is a startup founder with over two decades of experience in the tech industry. In Outrageous Startup Growth, Hodge presents the Outrageous Growth Framework that focuses on the psychology of both the entrepreneur and the customer. This book explores the very psychology of user experience. It delves into cognitive biases and how they affect our judgment of authenticity. You will discover various principles of the growth framework, including mindset, resilience, data-driven growth, building optionality, etc. You will also learn about FOMO, game-winning strategies, seizing opportunities for scaling, the user psychology toolbox, and more.

I doubt there is a better guide than this to learn from for startup founders and aspiring entrepreneurs. Outrageous Startup Growth is a transformative guide for business owners and product managers, at least for the ones who prioritize their customers' needs. In this rapidly changing world, I think a book like this helps highlight the importance of the customer experience. It enables startup founders to not only focus on profits and scaling but also to make sure they provide products and services that their targeted customers actually want. Colin Hodge goes through the particulars of his framework in great detail, thoroughly covering every aspect of business growth. I feel this type of model is necessary for startups to maximize their full potential today. Hodge also uses personal anecdotes and examples to make it easier for readers to understand his concepts. Highly recommended.
