Author Biography

I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada and am a graduate of McGill University and the University of Toronto. I turned a love of science into a career in food safety microbiology that lasted for thirty-five years.

Upon retiring, I decided to follow a different dream. I inherited a love for language and wordplay from my mother and my grandfather, and a love of reading from my father. This heritage, along with a lifetime of reading Nancy Drew, Agatha Christie, Sue Grafton, and Louise Penny mysteries, inspired me to create Damien Dickens, Private Investigator.

I live in Carmel, California with my husband and our Australian Labradoodle. When I'm not working on a Damien Dickens story, I can be found baking, tending the garden, or sharing long walks.

If you are looking for an entertaining, easy-to-read murder mystery, look no further – Phyllis Entis’ The Green Pearl Caper: A Damien Dickens Mystery fits the bill. This delightful mystery’s main character is Damien Dickens, a private investigator who lives in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the late 1970s. The book begins with the murder of Celine Sutherland, whom Damien rescued many years earlier. She came to him for help a second time, and he feels he let her down when her dead body was found. Soon, he was charged with the crime as his gun was the murder weapon. His bail was posted, and the remainder of the book is a genuine whodunit, with many interesting twists and turns. Damien has a supporting cast, including his secretary and lawyer. But, he also has enemies in the police department.

In The Green Pearl Caper: A Damien Dickens Mystery, author Phyllis Entis keeps the story flowing with smooth prose and dialogue. She aptly uses phrases depicting the sleuths of the 1970s. If you love Perry Mason, or other shows of that era, you will love this book! In fact, Damien has his own Della Street, and her name is Millie Hewitt. Millie is totally devoted to Damien and assists him in building his private investigative agency. There are many reminders of this era, including typewriters, desk phones, and antiquated criminal record keeping. For the private eye, it is much more difficult to track down potential criminals in a computerless age. Enjoy a trip back to the past with this enjoyable mystery.

The Green Pearl Caper is a captivating crime mystery set in 1979, Atlantic City. I enjoyed the aspect of knowing the crime upfront and then following Damien Dickens, private investigator, as he tries to figure out 'whodunit' and why. The characters are engaging and well developed and there are many twists and turns in the plot. I was left guessing to the end, and even then had some of it wrong. The writing is perfectly descriptive and flows smoothly. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next installment.
