Author Biography

If you enjoy espionage thrillers grounded in real-world experience, Dirk Marks writes from a place few authors can claim.

After nearly four decades in the diplomatic service of the Kingdom of the Netherlands—serving across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and New York—Dirk brings authenticity and insider perspective to every story. His time in the Security Service of the Department of Foreign Affairs adds a layer of realism that shapes the tension, strategy, and stakes in his writing.

Now based in Pennsylvania, Dirk writes thrillers that explore the hidden world behind international politics, where decisions carry consequences, and nothing is ever as it seems.

The Havana Syndrome: The Malecón Fall is a spy thriller novel by Dirk Marks. When the ambassador for the Kingdom of Tabari, Julius Jumaane, dies under mysterious circumstances in Havana, Cuba, Alex Simba, an intelligence officer, is called upon to solve the mystery. Alex is well aware of the fact that the head of diplomatic security, Julia Zabeke, had already disappeared after she went to investigate the case. Alex arrives in Cuba, only to find himself embroiled in a deeper conspiracy involving human trafficking, the CIA, and corrupt military officials. With hotels being bombed and his life in mortal danger, Alex must find a way to get himself and his friends out of trouble. Can he get to the bottom of the truth? What will happen to the culprits?

If you're a fan of stories about international spies and espionage, The Havana Syndrome is just the book for you. Dirk Marks has crafted a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that never allows you to take a breather. Every chapter has its own share of surprises for the reader. I didn't want to put the book down before finishing it. I also loved how Marks laces the narrative with tension, and the bustling atmosphere of Havana comes alive on the pages. Alex is just like Jason Bourne from the blockbuster Bourne movie series, only even more calm and collected in tense situations. The stakes feel real, as you're never really sure if your favorite characters will make it out alive. This book is tailor-made for thriller aficionados. I really enjoyed it, and so will you!
