The Heir's Choice by M Gerrick is the second book in the War of Six Crowns Series. I read the first book in the series so it may be safe to say I’m hooked. This is a saga of medieval magic and war. The protagonist is a young orphan girl, Callan, who is cursed with dreams and visions by an entity inside her that she cannot control or understand. The entity makes her life unbearable until she slowly gains a measure of control over it. There are two worlds involved here, and the big question is who exactly is Callan? The Heir's Choice answers that. Who Callen is and what she chooses to do and who she decides to ally herself with will have repercussions for everyone in both worlds.
I liked The Heir's Choice because I like medieval warfare and internecine strife. The writing is good and the characters and personalities are vivid. Good guys and bad guys stand out and you either love them or hate them, but you will never forget them. The story reminds me a lot of the classic struggle between the houses of York and Lancaster in English history. M Gerrick has a knack of showing how epic struggles between warring factions are a lot like the conflict between high school cliques. It’s all about weak and strong personalities, but loyalty, friendship and honor matter a lot too. Young people will love The Heir's Choice, especially if they happen to be fans of medieval life and history.
