Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, wondering what that noise was in your closet? In Laura Helland’s The Hellandback Kids, that’s exactly what happened to eleven-year-old Chris Hellandback. But when he got up and looked in the closet, there was nothing there. And, when he woke up his parents, and his dad also went to look, there was nothing there. So what was going on? Dad seemed to know, but he wouldn’t say. All he said was that Chris and his siblings should visit their great-grandmother in Scotland. She lived in a creepy old house that was once a hospital, a place where weird things happened. Each Hellandback kid has a wish, but things in Scotland go rather awry with talking rodents, giants, some time travel, ghosts, and so much more. There are even some evil spells. Will the kids ever find their way back home? And will things ever be the same?
Laura Helland’s middle-grade novel, The Hellandback Kids: Be Careful What You Wish For, is an intense fantasy adventure for young readers. The story takes off quickly, leaving the reader hanging onto every word, wishing for more, as the plot thickens. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the dialogue is used effectively to amplify both the characters and the settings. Descriptive narrative enhances the action and helps move the story forward. The author has created a fantastical story about wishes and dreams, and that we should be careful what we wish for. This is a great book for young readers.
