The Imaginary Invasion by Ubiquitous Bubba is an entertaining, humorous and thought provoking short story about humans living alongside imaginary friends, and extra dimensional beings. Ned and his dog Grendel discover they are imaginary beings who can move from place to place by imagining themselves wherever they want to be next. They meet Carl, a supposedly insane patient, who tells them the truth about the “X” who grab their human counterparts when they look in the mirror and then swap places and lives with them. These doppelgangers steal the lives of their humans and Ned and Grendel are determined to find a way to rescue the kidnapped humans and stop the doppelgangers for good.

Ubiquitous Bubba has created a well written and unusual tale that raises questions about what is considered reality and what is considered imaginary. I loved the philosophy and speculative themes that the author has woven into his story. It is when Ned takes the time to stop and question his existence and experiences that he begins to uncover some interesting and alarming happenings. The initial confusion he feels over what is real and what is not gives the story a wonderfully eerie, mysterious feel. Ned himself is a brave and entertaining character, and there are plenty of humorous moments in the story as he interacts with Grendel and other characters. Dr Siegel’s counterpart is well thought out too, and just nasty enough for readers to be rooting for the real Dr Siegel to defeat him. The Imaginary Invasion is a unique, quick and entertaining read with a plot that develops at a good pace, reaching a satisfying and thought provoking ending.
