Meghan Chase is thrust into the land of faeries when her little brother is captured and taken to Faeryland. In his place is a replica of the child who is aggressive and brutal. Meghan's best friend Robbie, a modern day Puck, leads her through her brother's closet door in search of the King of Oberon who holds the key to the secrets of Meghan’s brother's whereabouts and to Meghan herself.
The story appears to the reader to be a combination of characters from Shakespeare's Midsummer's Night Dream, Alice in Wonderland, The Never Ending Story and Labyrinth. The most lovable character is probably Grimalkin, a cat remarkably similar to the Alice character. Ash, the dark fey prince is not well developed in the story and yet, there is ongoing tension between the prince and Meghan, a fact which is probably necessary in anticipation of the sequel to this book.
Meghan acts as a good role model for stamina and courage to all the teenagers who will want to study the latest faery fantasy land. Her adventures are ongoing and somewhat unbelievable and yet, she is an admirable protagonist. Given the ongoing popularity of escape from reality teenage books, this one will delight many young readers.
