The Itch of the Middling Cat by R. S. Vern is for fans of literary fiction and novels about animals. Haee is a black cat with a crooked tail. Rescued by Tom and Jane when he was a kitten, Haee wants to be useful to his humans. He is a playful cat who finds it difficult to focus on one subject. Haee leaves their home after Jane establishes strict rules. Haee joins other cats at the Green Alley. A white cat named Whie mystifies him. Haee even becomes a vegetarian like her. Yet his restless spirit is not content with a boring life with a structured community of cats, so Haee continues his journey.

R. S. Vern writes a witty and deeply philosophical novel. From the first chapter of The Itch of the Middling Cat, we delve into the fascinating and puzzling world of felines. Haee is highly intelligent. He is a free spirit, a rebel even. We immediately fall in love with this charming and relatable main character. Haee has a compassionate heart. Thus, he tries hard to help Bettie, an elderly cat left to die alone by her human family. Haee observes humans and fellow cats with humor and subtle irony. "Maybe that was the reality of modern life—an everlasting, frantic struggle to keep all things going, with an undercurrent of dissatisfaction and discontent." I appreciated the author's clear writing style. Vern offers us the opportunity to explore complex and meaningful topics such as friendship, family values, cruelty toward animals, human impact on the environment, and self-discovery. We will never look at felines the same way again after reading this moving novel.
