The Journal is a work of fiction in the cozy mystery, suspense, and historical fiction subgenres. It is suitable for the general adult and young adult reading audiences and was penned by author Josh Hawk. In this intriguing mystery novel that’s sure to keep you guessing from cover to cover, we follow the exploits of our initial protagonist, Josh, who uncovers the journal of a missing detective, Heath Borjears. Heath, in turn, was searching for a missing girl in 1964, but what became of either of them? The story-within-a-story deepens as Josh delves into Heath’s world and finds out what it really takes to solve a mystery as deep and old as this one.

Author Josh Hawk has crafted a superb work of mystery and suspense that is the kind of novel a few generations could share and really get something exciting and satisfying out of it. I loved Josh as a central protagonist, and the craftsmanship put into the writing of such a sharp younger mind makes it easier for audiences to relate to him as he learns more about Heath and deepens his own understanding of the dark and strange motives that some people out there have in the world. The work is also gorgeously penned to serve up some delightful elements of historical noir, nodding to the classics and taking us back to older times whilst also offering a sharp modern perspective in the dialogue and Josh’s own personal attitude. Overall, The Journal is a highly enthralling and atmospheric mystery work that will please fans of the genre no matter their age.

I can't believe this is Mr. Hawk's debut book. It is masterfully done. His story flows like a seasoned author. I loved it! It reminds me of John Saul novels I've read before. (Kind of) If you like a good mystery, I highly recommend it.
