In "The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell" by Chris Colfer, twins Alex and Conner are transported to a delightful world of enchantment. They enter the world through a magical book given to them by their grandmother. It is a land where fairy tales are real. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White and other familiar characters live there, including the wicked queen.
Chris Colfer is quite versatile: he can act, sing and now we know he can write. "The Land of Stories" is an amazing read. I can hardly wait to see what Colfer will do in the future. "The Land of Stories" is filled with lessons including accepting who you are, courage, compassion and lots of expectation. Colfer addresses the pain of isolation and yearning. At times this tale seems a bit sad and yet inspiring at the same time. "The Land of Stories" is not a light read; it has great depth and yet the author managed to include humor and a sense of light. The message of compassion runs strong throughout this tale: compassion, forgiveness and understanding of people who do bad things. The characters are delightful. Alex and Conner were my favorite. Both characters show great depth. The dialogue is well done and adds much to the story-line. Like most siblings there is some teasing and squabbling that will leave the reader laughing. The plot has some exciting twists and turns. I hope there is a sequel to this book. I read this book to my grandchildren. They giggled and laughed and asked me to read it again.
