In Shami Stovall’s The Last Rift Dragon, seventeen-year-old Richter Whitlock is training to become a Knight of the Silver Fog, one of the dragon riders who protect Bridgehaven, a city spread across 112 islands. Only three dragons remain in the known world, leaving the order dependent on a final clutch of eggs. Richter has spent years preparing for the day each trainee receives an egg, hoping to follow his parents into the order after losing them during their service. The seven candidates possess magical gifts awakened by silver fog from dragon breath, making every evaluation dangerous in its own way. Their final test will decide the order in which they choose an egg. For Richter, receiving first selection could help preserve his family’s place among the knights just as Bridgehaven’s future rests on the dragons that remain.
Shami Stovall’s The Last Rift Dragon is an incredible fantasy adventure, and the author has fleshed out a world that is as ambitious as it is imaginative. Richter is loyal and remarkably compassionate, with his friendship with Lex bringing warmth. His generosity is shown when he grants the former stable boy land so Lex can train beside him. I love Zilvio, the Whitlock butler, for his devotion to Richter. He remembers Richter’s favorite raspberry pastry when bringing him a treat. The world-building is fantastic, with distinctive details filling each location. For example, pop berries break open around sweet juice. Still, it’s the near-cinematic descriptions of landscapes that steal the scene, from mountain peaks rising like islands above miles of mist as dragons perch across the rocks, to a mountain plateau, where tiny stones glow in a heartbeat rhythm beneath the travelers’ feet. Beautifully written and bold, readers who enjoy dragon riders in magical worlds will adore this.
