The human race is at war with a highly advanced race, the Quols, evil lords of darkness who like to toy with their intended victims, fomenting war and discontent and using the resulting chaos as the basis of a game of chance. Three undercover operatives of the Earth’s Spatial Development Protectorate are dispatched to a planet that seems to be of particular interest to these beings to find out why. Strangely, the planet they are destined for has failed to develop any technology, retaining a medieval society for millennia.
The Light of the Eldari by T.F.G. Wallis charts the adventures of the three experienced combatants as they assimilate themselves into a feudal way of life, swapping their blasters for swords and their spaceships for horses. They discover that this small, seemingly insignificant planet is crucial in the fight against the Quols who are determined to extinguish the light in our universe. But can the medieval folk of this idyllic planet prevail against the massive power of the dark lords?
In The Light of the Eldari, T.F.G. Wallis presents a fast paced narrative which bridges science fiction and fantasy, and although fans of this genre will find plenty to recognise, there are also astounding leaps of imagination which bring unexpected dimensions to the story. The plot is handled in an adult way and does not shy away from the colourful language commonly used by fighting men or their healthy interest in the opposite sex. An entertaining yarn and highly recommended, one of the best books in the genre I have read for some time.
