The Magic of Murder by Susan Lynn Solomon introduces us to Detective Roger Frey, who swears vengeance upon the killer who took the life of his partner with eight bullets to the chest. However, Chief Woodward has said he can't have anyone else from the squad of detectives to work the case. Emlyn knows that Roger will ignore the order from the chief and it will likely cost him not only his job, but his freedom. Due to how much she cares about him, she is determined to stop him. Emlyn uses the knowledge she gained recently about being a direct descendant of a witch who was hanged in 1692. Emlyn enlists a friend, Rebecca, to help her and, as the two work through an ancient spell book, the killer strikes again, killing Chief Woodward's wife and trying to kill Emlyn and Rebecca.
With a murder story that includes witchcraft, it could not possibly get much better to pique my interest as a reader. The best thing about this book is that it does get better, the writing is fantastic, and it flows perfectly. The whodunit aspect of the book keeps you guessing throughout and you can really tell that author Susan Lynn Solomon has put her heart and soul into this work. Emlyn is a compelling character and the way she cares for Detective Roger is the way I could see myself caring for someone as well. She really wants to do whatever it takes to help him through a rough time and make sure it doesn't get worse. Detective Roger, for his part, is a flawed character with a good heart and he really is a person you would want fighting on your side too, if you ask me. This book is worth the read and I look forward to more from this author. I highly recommend this book for an excellent read.
