In The Man Who Watched the Stars by Carol H. March, Tessa receives a frantic call from her ex-husband Josh, asking her to meet him. She picks him up in the middle of the Mojave Desert and drives him to her house in New Mexico. Nobody appeared to be chasing them. She had been Josh’s copilot on the Luna run. They married and divorced after five years before he became famous, making the first hyperspace jump using Teneran technology. Women liked dashing astronauts, and sometimes he gave in to temptation.
Josh is afraid the authorities will put him into a mental hospital to keep him from revealing a dark secret – hyperspace jumps mentally bind the human and Teneran pilot. Other hyperspace jumps confirmed the bond that develops between human males and Teneran pilots, and the authorities didn’t like the public knowing that their pilots were now gay, and so they ask all Tenerans to leave Earth. Josh’s alien partner flies in with a little craft and offers to take Tessa and her son to Tenera. Tessa reaches the only possible conclusion to resolve the problem.
The Man Who Watched the Stars is a simple short story, nicely written by Carol H. March, exploring an unexpected relationship with an alien species. The complex connection Tessa has with Josh, even after they are divorced, should have been expanded more fully, including the revulsion by Earth authorities of a bond between human and alien pilots. Despite these issues, I found the story engaging, giving me something to think about. I am sure many readers will also find this story interesting.
