The Misadventures of Nico and Maddie by Maria Aldana is an electrifying mystery for young readers. Along with their team of mystery investigators, Nico and his sister Maddie go in search of mystery, or perhaps trouble, at Crestwood Academy, much to the appreciation but mostly delight of their teachers as well as Headmaster Crumble. Not your average boarding school siblings, they are always on the hunt for clues to cases they are working on. There seems to be no shortage of cases, and often suspects, at the school, which has been around forever. Maddie sure seems to have a nose for mystery, but is often disappointed when the suspect turns out to be a hungry rodent in the roof or Miss Penny's cat, which possibly is haunted. The book ends in another mysterious, shall I say, case that had me longing for another even more suspenseful and riveting drama.
The Misadventures of Nico and Maddie is beautifully presented and makes reading and laughter come naturally. Maria Aldana has created something exceptional here, both for young and older readers. The story flows seamlessly, and the humor is extremely sharp without trying too hard. The good-natured comedy is what I enjoyed the most, the author making every scene or case into something quite delightful. From the book's cover to the perfect formatting, this is a winner all around. It is a book that I enjoyed and appreciated immensely, and will be recommending far and wide, and which I am sure will be a hit for both the younger crowd as well as parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents.
