Brazil always asks his girlfriend Delores for money in the storybook The Mongoose and the Princess by Cindy Christmas. He wants money to buy food, clothes, and jewelry. She is fed up with his begging and decides to go to the witch Nivea to cast a spell on him. The witch warns Delores that the spell can backfire if she is doing it wrongfully. Once Delores reaches home, she sees a mongoose running about with a gold necklace around its neck. That is her boyfriend Brazil after the spell! When Delores tries to take the necklace, the mongoose runs into the woods and meets Nivea. The witch tells Brazil how to break the spell. He meets Anguilla at that time, who helps to break the spell. Will the spell backfire on Delores?

The story is interesting and the twist in the tale makes it a fun read. The illustrations are wonderful and they bring the characters and the scenes alive. Delores, Brazil, Nivea, Anguilla, and the mongoose have been portrayed well and their individuality is clearly projected as the story progresses. The message of the spiritual principle of cause and effect has been knitted into the plot nicely through Delores. ‘You reap what you sow’ is the message young readers get after seeing Delores and her evil action toward Brazil. The book is a good story for read aloud and storytelling sessions in classrooms and at home. The message makes it a must-read to help children understand the importance of being kind and honest to the people around them.
