Gregory G. Allen offers readers a fascinating, engrossing children’s tale while providing valuable lessons about staying curious and embracing one’s uniqueness in The Monsters of Marymount Mansion. The mansion’s basement is home to a family of monsters who only venture out into the world around them during Halloween. Eight-year-old Toby is tired of being stuck all year in the basement. During Halloween, he sets out on an exciting adventure but has to return home after the day is over. Toby wonders what it would be like to enjoy being outside like humans. He plans another adventure but this time he has a frightening encounter. The incident, however, does not deter him from his dream. He decides to seek counsel from an older, reclusive monster.
This is a wonderful story that is as enlightening as it is captivating. Allen’s characters are original and intriguing. I loved Toby’s unique features, including his curiosity and his drive for adventure. Other monsters have striking personalities and characteristics too. Shelby Goodwin’s wonderful illustrations integrate beautifully into the adventures in the story. Toby’s escapades will inspire children to appreciate their distinct qualities and seek advice when faced with questions to which they do not have answers. The story is carried by enjoyable interactions between the monsters and their conversations with the inhabitants of the house. The Monsters of Marymount Mansion by Gregory G. Allen is a delightful, absorbing children’s tale with fantastic characters, engaging illustrations, and insightful lessons that readers will find unforgettable.
