The Moonchild by David Cameron is an adventure story that takes the reader to faraway lands and ignites their imagination on every page. Peter Calender is born into a special family and tasked with putting to rights that which was marred long before he was even born. He begins his adventure not knowing his special destiny or the dangers that await him. He must learn quickly and adapt in order to stay alive. Along his fantastical journey, he encounters friends of the truest kind as well as enemies who would see him fail in his quest, seizing the precious stone he has. Peter has to decide which of three figurative and literal paths to take, each one carrying with it both perils and rewards. The book concludes with Peter and his friends preparing to act upon his decision.
The Moonchild by David Cameron is a captivating story for both young and old alike. I enjoyed the author’s pacing throughout the book and the way he describes the fantasy world his main character finds himself in. The mystery starts off strongly and never loses pace for a moment throughout the narrative, pulling the reader along pleasantly as each new part of the adventure unfolds. Peter Calender is an ideal main character as he demonstrates teamwork, positivity, and the will to survive throughout the story. Gradually, the mystery of why Peter entered the fantasy world is revealed, along with the power of the stone placed in his possession. The addition of two evil powers creates layers of intrigue for Peter and his friends in the story, setting up the book perfectly for an exciting sequel.
