Niagara is different from other mosquitoes. She does not like feeding on blood or nectar from plants. In The Mosquito by Cindy Christmas, readers are taken to a small town where there are a lot of mosquitoes. Niagara is disliked by other mosquitoes, especially females, because she is different. She prefers to die rather than feast on human blood. She is sad that no one likes her. She meets Moscow and he tells her to try nectar because she has to survive. The other mosquitoes start liking Niagara and call her ‘Miracle Mosquito’ because she could bite and cure humans who were sick with diseases.
The story is a fun read which will take readers into the world of mosquitoes. Children will love the portrayal of Niagara as a good mosquito who is different from the rest of the breed. The pictures are colorful and they bring the characters and the moments in the story alive. It is an excellent bedtime storybook for children and can be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The story is also about friendship and acceptance and the author weaves those messages into the story beautifully. All the characters in the story, be it Niagara, Moscow, Miami, Champagne, or the Spider, are well sketched and memorable and they complement the main character of Niagara very nicely.
