Pete Dawson, a British man in his mid-fifties, is dealing with a number of changes in the past few years. He was recently divorced; his ex-wife moved to New York and only one of his grown children lives with him, while the other two live out of town. He had owned a pawnbroking business and sold it. Rather than sitting alone at home, he found a new job as a store detective at the local supermarket, Megabuys. Two female employees show a romantic interest in him. More changes are on the horizon – a possible job at the Village Pawnbrokers shop and an alluring relationship with a much younger woman. In the entertaining novel The Not So Secret Diary of a Store Detective by Elliot Stanton, a humorous, yet thought-provoking story is told.

There are many fascinating facets to this story. Pete is a complex character; he has sought psychotherapy and is writing in a diary, as recommended. The story is related through these diary entries that are amusing, heartwarming, and heartrending. The juxtaposition of the major events of his life, along with his daily routines of work, eating takeaway dinners, and watching television all evening, is an interesting perspective. The time period covers approximately the first hundred days of 2017. Pete also muses about what is occurring with Brexit and with the newly-elected, chaotic US President. Author Elliot Stanton has written a fast-paced, fun to read novel in The Not So Secret Diary of a Store Detective. An excellent book!
