Amid the continuous threat of attacks by vicious demonic forces, a young warrior falls in love with her trainer in the compelling fantasy novella, The One Chosen: A Diasodz Short Story (Chronicles of the Diasodz) by Yvette M Calleiro. Despite her mother’s concerns, Valerie is enthusiastic about starting her training and possibly joining The Protectors, a group of trained special beings tasked with protecting humans from demonic creatures. Valerie is immediately drawn to Nolan on her first day. During the training, others are also attracted to Valerie but she is only interested in Nolan. Despite their obvious attraction to each other, Nolan remains distant and seems only focused on his mission as a trainer. When he comes close to losing Valerie, he begins to re-evaluate his decision as Valerie learns to trust him.
The One Chosen is a creative piece with a captivating storyline and original characters. I loved the many layers in the story including the main plot and the surprising twists that are later revealed. Calleiro also does a great job of building the realm that the special beings, the Diasodz, can access. The work also contains an introduction that offers concise background information that helped me understand the story and fully immerse myself in it. The One Chosen is a page-turner that combines multiple genres to create a captivating short story. It is a standalone with an imaginative concept and complex characters and is a great addition to the series. Looking forward to reading more of Yvette M Calleiro’s other works.
