The Ones Left Behind by Elizabeth Johns navigates its way through the difficulties of military life and its frequent tough outcomes. What would you do if you had tried to live your life as decently as possible after your husband died in combat, but two years later ended up needing to ask for help? Kitty didn't have an easy life after she married Peter and his loss only contributed to its complications. When she finds herself on a dead-end street, she ends up seeking the help of an old friend, against all she believes in, only to discover that he has just returned home due to a life-threatening leg injury sustained in battle. A tumultuous past and mixed feelings will be the critical point in Mathias's recovery and would decide which direction their relationship may take in the future.
If you like historical romances, you will certainly enjoy The Ones Left Behind. It tells a tale of grief and the right-person wrong-time theme which develops perfectly and does not rush the pace. I enjoyed Elizabeth Johns's mastery in taking the reader through the different stages a person experiences after suffering a partially disabling injury. Aside from this journey, I also was impressed by the interesting information this book provides regarding the different properties of medicinal herbs. In addition, I relished the book's secondary characters such as Hornsby, as his appearances offered a humorous diversion. It is also worth mentioning the effort made with historical accuracy in the vocabulary used in the book.
