The Owl and the Shepherd Boy by Tuula Pere is the story of a young shepherd who finds himself in a precarious situation that forces him on a challenging journey to reach home. Nicky's father leaves him in a mountain meadow with a herd of goats, a willow whistle, and some food and supplies, to spend a week in a simple cottage. But Nicky would rather be down in the village with his family. Feeling lonely, he plays his willow whistle and is unexpectedly answered by a hooting owl. Soon, a fierce storm damages his cottage, and his food and supplies are ruined. Nicky begins the dangerous trek to his village but finds unexpected help in the form of the friendly owl and his friends. Will Nicky reach home and reunite with his family?

Having friends makes hard tasks easier to get through, and it's beautifully demonstrated in The Owl and the Shepherd Boy. If you enjoy survival stories, you will love this picture book. Tuula Pere's books feature some amazing animal characters. In this one, an owl comes to the rescue of the young hero and helps him on a journey that would otherwise have gone terribly for him. Nicky is a young kid bound by duty and love for his family. He braves his fears to herd the goats and finds himself in a perilous situation, but he never gives up hope. Readers of all ages will find this tale rewarding. Catty Flores' illustrations are as great as ever. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and heartily recommend it.
