The Pale Flesh of Wood by Elizabeth A. Tucker is a beautifully written family saga that spans multiple years and explores the long-lasting effects of a decision made by Charles, a patriarch. It began when Charles returned home from the war a changed man, with a strained relationship with his mother, Caroline, and growing distance from his wife, Louise. The book is situated mainly in Northern California with the Hawkins family as the main characters, particularly Lyla, whose life changed after her father, Charles, took his life. As Lyla, her mother Louise, and Grandma Caroline struggled with the aftermath of Charles' death, it became clear how past traumas can be passed on to the next generation.

What stands out most about this novel is its emotional depth and that the characters Elizabeth A. Tucker built are deeply authentic. Her writing is detailed, which makes the emotions and humor in this book come alive. The author didn’t shy away from the dark side of family life; she boldly tackled themes of neglect and the longing for connection. As the narrative shifts between Charles' recollections of the war, Louise's struggles with depression, and Lyla's coming-of-age, I could feel how their struggles were slowly breaking the family apart. Tucker was so precise in describing even the smallest things. The inclusion of specific dates and locations gave the narrative more realism, which kept me invested in the characters. I recommend The Pale Flesh of Wood for readers who enjoy deep, emotional family sagas that explore themes of grief, healing, and personal legacies.
