Getting Ready for an Earthquake: A Fun and Empowering Guide to Earthquake Safety for Kids by Fei Zheng-Ward is a very important and timely book for pre-school children, but older kids can also learn important lessons from it. It starts out by explaining why and how earthquakes happen. The explanation is accompanied by familiar drawings of an elephant stomping on the ground, a truck rumbling by, and the image of Earth’s globe being criss-crossed by fault lines. Then it deals with pre-earthquake planning that should involve the entire family. Itemized lists cover everything that might come in handy during and after a quake. The next three pages show furniture, appliances, pictures, and shelves on the wall that need to be secured to make the rooms quake-proof. This is followed by advice on what to do during and after an earthquake.
I can’t emphasize how important this book is for the entire family, especially for young children. So many tragedies could have been prevented by lessons learned from this very well-organized and presented book. The colourful pictures illustrate every point made by the text, and they make a scary subject easily relatable even for very young children. The book successfully navigates this difficult subject by being simple but informative, covering the whole range of information from understanding and preventive action. The author knows how to talk to young children without confusing or overwhelming them. If I had young children, especially if I lived in earthquake-prone areas, I would make it a priority to buy this book and make sure my kids absorb everything they need from Getting Ready for an Earthquake by Fei Zheng-Ward. I highly recommend it.
