In The Past Came Hunting by Donnell Ann Bell, Melanie made mistakes in her youth and ended up spending time behind bars but she is no longer that girl, but a responsible widow. Luke is her teenage son, whom she would do anything to protect. Melanie is excited to be moving into her new home and Luke is excited because his next-door neighbor Matt is his age, plays basketball, and they immediately become best friends. Melanie is shocked when she meets Matt’s dad; he is Joe, the officer who arrested and sent her to jail. They are not happy to be neighbors but since both are devoted parents they tolerate each other for the sake of their sons. Drake is the bad guy and the reason Melanie was sent to prison. He has recently been released and has spent years blaming Melanie for his long sentence and wants to finally get his revenge. Melanie and Joe slowly form a friendship. Drake gets closer and closer to finding Melanie, putting her in danger and needing Joe to be her protector.

The Past Came Hunting by Donnell Ann Bell has so many elements that make it impossible to stop reading. There is romance, suspense, danger, family, violence, and more as a woman fights to start a new life with her son, in a new place. I really enjoyed The Past Came Hunting. Melanie’s mistakes caught up to her when the past collided with her present life; Joe is faced with making tough decisions; the suspense of Drake going through with his plans and the hint of love make it impossible to put the book down. Donnell Ann Bell has written a book that has all the makings of a great story and should not be passed up.
