Cristina Garcia teaches children the importance of teamwork in The Pesky Problem, a delightful children’s book. Various pumpkins and gourds live at the top of a nice, sunny hill in the countryside. This would be a perfect place to live except it has one big problem: a group of crows often peck, poke, and pester the gourds and pumpkins. Fairytale Pumpkin thought they could borrow the cornfield’s scarecrow because it keeps the crows away from the corn. Wise, old Warty Goblin tells them that they can protect themselves. The pumpkins and gourds roll down the hill to the cornfield, only to have their request rejected. After climbing back up the hill, the gourds and pumpkins listen to Warty Goblin’s plan and work together to scare off the crows who bully them.

If you are looking for a book to help children learn that they have amazing power when they believe in themselves and work together with others, look no further. The Pesky Problem by Cristina Garcia is an entertaining story that children will enjoy as they learn the power of teamwork. Using various types of gourds and pumpkins as characters, Cristina writes in a fun style that will keep children’s attention. At the end of the book, Cristina gives some information on the different types of pumpkins and gourds introduced. Artwork by Lenka Knoetze and Amy de Vries does a wonderful job of illustrating the different characters in the story. Spend time discussing with your child how to handle bullies. Also, discuss how to build a team and use teamwork to overcome difficult challenges. This book is great for children and helps them realize their importance.
