The Prince and the Flea is a children’s story, co-written by Jade Diane and her mother, and illustrated by Naomi Alessandra. Prince Charlie often daydreams about meeting and marrying his fairytale princess. His mother, Queen Selene, is quite regal and rather snobby. When Charlie receives an invitation to attend dinner with Princess Kittie, the door is slammed in his face when the princess discovers that Prince Charlie is not Prince Charming, leaving him to walk home in the pouring rain. On returning home, Prince Charlie cries at the rejection, and wonders if his dream-princess even exists. As it rains, a very happy Princess Tillie, who had been stood up by Prince Charming due to the rain, is invited into the palace and dines with the prince. She stays overnight in the guest room, and the prince deems her fit to marry him. Mid-way through the ceremony, the princess stops the wedding, determined that the prince prove that he is worthy of her before they become man and wife.

In a whole unique twist on the classic fairytale, The Princess and the Pea, Jade Diane and her mother have come up with a modern day romance to match today’s equality standards. I like that it shows the snobbery of some rich people, and casts new values upon the elite royals. Fifty years ago, women were seen as weak, desperately needing the approval and love of a man in order to be worthy, but things are nothing like that in modern times. Not only do I love the story in the book, but the very fact that updating the tale has come from a child says a lot in itself. Women do not need to measure up to any man’s expectations in order to thrive. People should marry for love, regardless of their sexual preference, religion or race, and this children’s book shows how outdated values do not belong in today’s society. Men should be happy with their partner in life, just as women should be happy with theirs. I recommend this book to all readers, young and old, as it truly does paint the modern day couple in a delightful, loving and happy way. This is one of the most fun, well-written books I have read in a very long time!
