The Psychic: A Young Adult Paranormal Thriller, Volume 1 is a paranormal mystery written by Rupert Fox. Elizabeth Wood is suffering from recurring nightmares that vividly recreate the tragic death of her parents when their car sank into the waters of Loch Lochy. She was six years old at the time and had miraculously survived the accident, after an anonymous rescuer pulled her out of the car and left her by the side of the road. In her dreams she can still see her motionless parents sinking into the water each night, and the resulting lack of sleep is tormenting her waking life. Elizabeth doesn't want her grandfather to know that the dreams have returned; it would only upset him and make him urge more strongly that she go back into therapy. When James, her musician boyfriend, suggests that she see his old college friend, Alex Mathews, she dismisses the suggestion, thinking he's yet another therapist, but Alex Mathews is actually a psychic. While still hesitant, Elizabeth decides to take a chance and it's a move that will change her life.
Rupert Fox's paranormal mystery thriller, The Psychic: A Young Adult Paranormal Thriller, Volume 1, is a stylish and exciting blend of the paranormal and police procedural genres. I loved how Elizabeth's problem with nightmares brings her to an understanding of her own latent paranormal skills, and the interactions between her, her grandfather, and Alex Mathews are a joy to follow. Fox's plot is taut and suspenseful as the police try to catch the kidnapper of a young girl with the psychic assistance of Elizabeth and Alex. This is a fast-paced and well-written story that left me feeling satisfied yet wanting more, so I'm quite pleased that it's just the first book in a series. The Psychic: A Young Adult Paranormal Thriller, Volume 1 is highly recommended.
