The Redwoods (Book One) by Ross Turner is the journey of a young 11-year-old girl named Vivian Featherstone, who lived in a world surrounded by maids, servants and tutors in a mansion with the only source of energy being candlelight. In her eleven years secluded behind the walls of the mansion, she lived with the noise of her thoughts, overlooking forests, mountains, and a city completely forbidden for her to enter. Her imagination propelled her to be a very astute, smart little girl protected by her powerful parents from learning about the family heirloom, which was powerful and sometimes dangerous. Over a span of six years, Vivian eventually experiences the heirloom and learns a way of life unlike any other. Why was the homestead called the Redwood Empire? Why did the forest turn red?
The Redwoods (Book One) by Ross Turner was entertaining, easy to read, and will make you not want to put it down until reaching the end. It keeps you guessing as to what will happen next in Vivian’s complex and sheltered life. The plot and flow of the story were well written. The storyline is an unexpected twist but worth the effort to keep reading. The chapters are short enough to hold attention yet thoroughly developed. The book is a delightful mix of true possibilities and outright fantasy. The author guides you through a maze of interesting twists to the story. Young adults will enjoy the storyline about the animals in the forest and their protective instinct towards young Vivian. A well written book.
